Join Marbleseed and the Organic Fruit Growers Association at James Lake Farms in Three Lakes, Wisconsin for the Organic Cranberry Field Day. We will visit two cranberry marshes operated by John Stauer of James Lake Farms that will showcase cranberry bed marsh construction and layout, water movement and usage, management of land on a cranberry marsh and organic fertility and pest control. John will speak about how we transitioned an existing marsh to organic as well as the pollinator habitat he has added to benefit organic cranberry production. This is a free event and lunch will be provided.
Presenter Bios:
John Stauner - James Lake Farms is a certified organic cranberry marsh in beautiful Northern Wisconsin, just south of Three Lakes. We are a family owned business and have owned the James Lake property since 2006. In 2016 we purchased the local Thunder Lake marsh and converted it to organic production. The marshes were originally started in late 1940’s and several of our beds date from this time. Additional acres have been planted over the years and today we grow 189 acres of certified organic cranberries with twelve different fruit varieties. Owners, John and Nora Stauner, are committed to growing a product that can make a difference in peoples lives.
Allison Jonjak - Allison grew up on a cranberry marsh founded by her grandfather in 1939. Studying ag engineering and soil chemistry, she worked with row crop farmers until the University of Wisconsin created a Cranberry Outreach Specialist position. This allowed Allison to return to her favorite state and work keeping a tight feedback loop between growers and researchers of her favorite crop.
